When Did the Happy Hour Culture Start?
The Happy Hour term was first used by William Shakespeare in Henry V, Act I, Scene 2, as “Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour/That may give furtherance to our expedition...”
Although Shakespeare didn’t use the term as it is used now, he is the founder of the term Happy Hour. Later on, the term started getting popular around the 1880s as a moment for entertainment. In June 1913, a crew of Arkansans began to refer to their regularly scheduled smokers as happy hours.
Before World War I, people used to drink cocktails before dinner while referring to the moment as cocktail hour or Happy Hour, which continued to grow. Soon, the Random House Dictionary of American Slang dated Happy Hour as “afternoon drinks at the bar.”
After that period of time, Happy Hour became popular as afternoon drinks before dinner. Restaurants and bars started to use this phrase for their marketing, and that’s where we make a difference because our Happy Hour is traditional.
